“I wasn’t prepared to expose stories about something so special and wonderfully private that is happening in my life. I guess a part of me wishes that I’d never have to and that maybe I could protect this special time. I was dreaming.”-Heath Ledger on his relationship with Michelle Williams and the birth of his daughter, Matilda

Matilda was two when Ledger died, and has only the sketchiest memory of the father who used to lavish her with lifesize toy animals and ice cream. Now five, she often asks Williams questions about him: what was he like, what happened to him, where he went. She once asked her mother if he died because his batteries ran out.
“All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him.”

“But every time I really miss him and wonder where he’s gone, I just look at her.”

“My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day.”
